5 Tips to for a Happy, Healthy Puppy

PuppiesWe love our pets like they are a member of our family, and in most ways, they are. We want every new family to enjoy the company of their furry friend for many years, which is why we offer new puppy parents many suggestions to help ensure that their pup has a long, healthy life.

Take Care of Their Teeth

Tooth decay is a common, yet serious condition for our pets. It not only creates dental issues, but it can spread and cause infections throughout the body to major organs. That doesn’t mean you need to brush their teeth every day to ensure minty, fresh breath, but their teeth and gums should be taken care of a few times each week to keep them reasonably clean.

You can purchase special kits that include small toothbrushes and special toothpaste that is formulated for use with dogs. Never use human toothpaste, though, as there are ingredients in most brands that is dangerous to dogs. If there is a significant plaque build-up or you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, take your dog to a groomer.

Watch the Weight

Obesity is an increasing issue for both humans and animals. Just as you exercise to keep yourself healthy and maintain a balanced diet, watch what your dog is eating and make sure they are getting enough of a workout. That means not giving them human foods that are high in fat and avoiding giving them too much pet food. Keep track of how much you’re feeding them and consider adjusting the quantity and frequency of mealtimes.

Exercise

Along with diet, exercise is extremely important for your pet. It doesn’t have to be a strict, routine work out, but set aside at least an hour a day to run and play. This should be in addition to the regular walks that you take them on. Also, make sure that they spend time with other dogs to stay emotionally healthy as well.

Keep Stresses Down

It will sound silly, but your puppy – just like the rest of us – needs time to relax and unwind. There will be a lot of excitement surrounding your puppy when they first come home with you – as they have a new house and new environment to explore, not to mention all the members of their new family to learn, smell and love. These changes, though, can cause stress for your puppy. Allow your dog to rest when he or she needs to and don’t force them into playing.

Checkups and Vaccinations

Make sure that your puppy has regularly scheduled checkups. Your veterinarian will be able to look for any diseases or potential health risks during your routine appointments, and can track your new family member’s growth and development. Puppies should go four times a year and at least once a year when they are fully grown.
